Who is Island Green Power?
Island Green Power is a leading developer of renewable energy projects, with a focus on utility-scale solar farms and battery storage systems. Our mission is to help the UK increase our solar energy generation, making more renewable energy possible whilst drastically reducing carbon emissions.
Where is Welby Solar Farm located?
The proposed solar site is located near Grantham, approximately 1.5 km north of Welby, on land at Pasture Farm. The coordinates for the centre of the site are SK 97887 40321.
Why here?
This site was selected for the project because of its proximity to a grid connection point, as there is a maximum distance beyond which a project becomes unviable. The flat terrain and large fields provide ideal conditions for efficient design and maximum energy production. Additionally, the area is predominantly non-Best and Most Versatile (BMV) land, minimising the impact on high-quality agricultural areas.
Why is Welby Solar Farm needed?
Welby Solar Farm would play a crucial role in meeting both the UK’s and South Kesteven’s environmental targets. By delivering clean and reliable energy, it directly supports the UK’s ambition to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and contributes to the target of a fivefold increase in solar power by 2035.
On a local level, the development is in line with South Kesteven District Council’s 2019 Climate Action Strategy, aiming to create a low-carbon district by 2030.
By generating renewable energy, the solar farm will help reduce carbon emissions, aid in climate change adaptation, and support the district’s long-term sustainability and biodiversity efforts, aligning with the broader vision for a sustainable UK.
How much electricity would be generated?
The project would have a maximum power output of 46 megawatts (MW).
What does the proposed development consist of?
Our proposed development involves the installation of ground-mounted solar panels and battery energy storage. Additionally, the project will include key infrastructure, a 33kV substation and inverter stations strategically positioned throughout the site.
The development also requires laying approximately 4km of underground cable to connect the site with the National Grid Electricity Distribution’s Grantham Bulk Supply Point (Grantham BSP).
How long would the solar farm be in operation?
The design life of Welby Solar Farm is intended to be temporary, lasting for 40 years. After this period, the solar farm will be decommissioned, allowing the land to revert to its original use.
What impact will the Proposed Development have on the area?
The proposed development is carefully designed to be considerate of its environment. Visual impacts will be minimised through strategic tree planting and the enhancement of hedgerows.
Once the development is operational, it will lead to a significant increase in local biodiversity. Our proposals include promoting skylark nesting near the site. Furthermore, the solar farm’s pesticide-free environment will make it a valuable food source for pollinators like bees and create habitats for small mammals.
Additionally, as part of our commitment to the local community, we will establish a Community Benefit Fund to support local initiatives. This ensures that the solar farm contributes positively and sustainably to the area.
How can we have our say?
Although our public consultation closed on 5th February 2024, we still encourage you to reach out if you have any questions or comments regarding the solar farm proposals. Additionally, we welcome your suggestions and ideas for our Community Benefit Fund. Please feel free to contact us at info@welbysolar.com.
